All about Books and Reading!

Assalam-o-alaykum w.w!

VL tagged me, and here I am with my joys of reading. My relationship with books is very old … don’t take it to be that old … I’m just an year over two decades … so please give some trouble to your own senses!

How I came nearer to reading:

I remember those 8-10 paged small stories use to buy in abundance at very early age of عمر و عیار and his various adventures. I used to buy them from the sunday markets for 50 paisas merely … LOLZ! Simultaneously, I almost read each and every book by Enid Blyton [and till age 10 I thought her name is Guid Blyton … due to her signatures and furthermore that she is a he :-) ], and many other such picturesque stories which were stored in abundance at our place due to the shared reading habit of my three elder siblings! Ami and Abu collected many story books and reading stuff, which is presented in a very interesting way by UK’s publishers, from the days they spent abroad. And this helped us all a lot in formulating our reading habits.

And yeah how could I forget the very famous Robin Hood and his adventures, then Lost Horizon, A tale of two cities, Robinson Cruisoe and the list is very long … !

If the books’ interestinng and captivating … you can easily find it in my hands when i’m waiting for water to boil … on the kitchen cabinet when i’m making the rotiis … in my hand when wathing some drama/film on TV … till the time it ends … and that is one nite usually … If boring don’t ask!

Coming closer to Urdu prose!

Then, gradually my interest in Urdu novels and poetry started, and I read every novel I could get from anywhere … bought a very few though … borrowed a lot from friends and sister’s friends! But I remember the names of the two novels that I read in my step towards Urdu reading were “زرتاشیہ” and “فردوسِ بریں”. The latter was difficult … but somehow I completed it and really liked it too. Actually these were the ones I had at my home, as they were owned by ami … so I started from here in 8th class. I read the former one and read it repeatedly; mostly because of the description of beautiful dresses and places … it was written back in time of nawabs.

Oh Khudaya … till class 6th i read آنکھ مچولی with so much punctuality … loved it :)

Total number of books owned, ever:

It’s hard to get the number … many many and many is the answer ^_^

Last book I bought:

A novel “Breaking Away” … for the past four years I mainly bought CS and electro-related books … plus a very few novels!

Last book I read:

Reading now-a-days “Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth” by Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad r.a!

It’s a remarkable book on various issues of life in perspective of Islam!

Five books which mean a lot to me:

1 – The Holy Quran:
Fortunately our Arabic teacher in 8th class taught us Arabic in such a manner that we started understanding it more profoundly rather then previously when it was taught as a subject and not as a language. Then as doing the word to word meaning and understanding the first five suparah’s was in my Nasiraat’s syllabus. So fortunately that helped me a lot. Now reading Quran-e-Hakeem, when I’ve the very privilege to understand most parts of it without looking at the literal meanings given, makes the reading of Quran a real joy. I recommend all of you to start learning the meanings, as most of the words are common and repeated; automatically you’ll start loving Quran more and more.

2 – Deewan–e-Ghalib:
I always love reading Mirza Ghalib, I must say کمال کا بندہ تھا.

3 – A Man of God:
It’s a biography of Hadhrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad written very beautiful, and then seeing moments from his life is a real joy. He indeed was a great person. When I love the very person a lot, then surely his biography means a lot to me too!4 – Now and Forever: Ahh! It was such a beautiful novel; but somehow I lost it and now despite my findings at many bookstores, I’m still unable to locate it. Its environment is of Victorian ages and the theme and progressing style of novel is so much absorbing.

5 – Children’s Annual:
My Ami bought it, an English annual! It’s like those MAD series and the annuals; if anyone ever got hand on any of it. Its some 25 yrs old and still very gripping. With stories, puzzles, cartoons, picturesque stories, and so many things I still treasure it a lot!

My companion in reading:

Uzma, who else … in 8th class when we were given access to a specific cupboard of our college library, me and Uzma became mad after it. Previously, we were only issued baby books … as we would term them … having stories of prince and princesses … we wanted something more now! So, from this cupboard we came closer to the world of R. L. Stine and Stephen King and the horror, thrill and suspense they captured. Remember me 1,2,3 was so interesting and is the only name I remember from those days!

Oh god! This post can now be measured in yards so me stopping here and I now tag …

Do you have siblings older than you ?
I have two sisters older than me. I used to read whatever books they had or brought. Since when ? May be, since I started reading. I read their course books, stories, novels, Magazines, even composition and mathematics. The eldest sister started 1st year MBBS at Fatima Jinnah Medical College Lahore when I started my 8th class. During summer vacation of my sister, I had read complete grey’s anotomy. It was such a heavy book that I could not lift it, so, I used to place it on a tea-poy to the head-side of my bed and straight on my tummy I used to read it.

Oh, I too was very fond of those 1 rupee to 5 rupee wala books! They were available in our school stationary shop and I had a huge collection!!! As a kid, I licked each and every page of each and every magazine I got my little hands on ^_^

Anyway, I have dewan-e-ghalib and indeed it is a great possession but I don’t think I can read it without using an urdu dictionary :p

Hmmmm . . . Read books by Edin Blyton at much less than 10 years of age. I don’t remember having read anything thing before I was 10 years. I am only told that at age 8 years, I was a story writer. I really don’t remember. Umar Ayyar I read when I was in 7th or 8th class but that one was not 10 pages. That was quite a book.

Reading books about one’s own belief is a duty sort of thing and should not be counted in reading.

I am being bated to attack your library some day as you own uncountable books. My selves of the size 15 foot long 11 foot high are full of books but these can be counted in 10 minutes.
