PTV and Breaking News Phenomena

Assalam o alaykum w.w.

Just in two days time Pakistan saw two suicide bombing attacks; with one in Islamabad’s Marriott hotel on 26th Jan and the next one on 27th Jan in Peshawar’s famous Qissa Khwani bazaar on an Ashura Procession. Lives were lost and undoubtedly it was a BIG ATTACK and a Time of CRISIS … but our very dear PTV (few years back someone called it as Pitta hua TV) in almost 42 years of its lives is still unaware of this BREAKING NEWS Phenomena …!

No doubt it takes time to know about an event (though I guess they may be having GEO installed in their headquarters to get the event knowledge fast), then permissions are needed to b sought from the foreign office and information ministry, and after so much of hassle then (thankfully?) a little news item is added to the scroll on PTV world.

In the Peshawar’s event, other channels were giving a Breaking News with full focus on what has happened, the severity of incident and even though the Famous 9 bajjay wala Khabarnama was in progress … they were the ones showing off first the sucking Engr Ameer Maqaam’s visit to some ABC place (I wonder if that man really sits in his office to do some REAL work or he only goes there when the salary is to be drawn?) … and then this Rickshaw rally or something that was organized in Delhi (maybe) was much much important than the few men who lost their lives and yet many others who were seriously injured …!

WOW – PTV you rock … I know State Channel has some “responsibilities” and “permissions” to be sought after all – still my dear PTV, you’ve a long path ahead to progress … No matter how liberal you become … Best Of Luck …!

Do have a look at this interesting Tourism Tamasha by Mustansar Hussain Tarar published in today’s dawn.

Good and keen observation from your side. I do fully agree with you. PTV is the state channel and yes it sometimes needs to be selective and it need to review how to present a news but it should not take ages to do that. At least news should be given till its Braking news not when it is am old news.

So i agree PTV need to mend its way other wise it will be forgotten as already Geo is wonderful alternative.

Well, I like PTV. Jaisa bhi hai, apna tu hai.

But you have a nice point there.

I got to watch some PTV during my trip to Nepal and rather liked the khaalis Urdu they spoke on that channel.

As for news coverage, state-owned channels always have such problems and it is a similar case with Doordarshan in India, which I watch only if there is a problem with accessing cable-TV or if it is showing something like a cricket match or Asian Games, etc., for which it has exclusive telecast rights.

My favourite news-channels are ‘BBC World’ and ‘NDTV 24×7′.

Wa-alaikum Salam Asma:),

All our government institutions are similar. Everything comes from sincerity, honesty and vision from the leaders. Unforunately, insecurity ( mostly a result of dishonesty & incompetence) has been quite high at that level.
Read ” Tourism Tamasha”, again the same situation:). Just to add to this I read somewhere that current education minister who is a general and ex-ISI chief told a reporter “..now a student would complete 40 ‘Siparay’ of Holy Quran from Class III to VIII in school”. Need I say more!:)

Well, i still consider PTV a family channel & still there is so much entertaining. Hum ne bhi 2months pehlay he cable lagwai hai lakin still PTV at 7:45 for drama serial dekha jaata hai.
app ke point se main b agree karta hoon k PTV news ke muamley main nikama hai. Subah se le kar shaam tak sab ek he news ko repeat karte rehte hain. Aur yeh baat mere dad ko b buhat buri lagti hai kyun k wo aksar kisi khas news ke liye saari news suntay lakin un ke matlooba news nahi aati thee to wo PTV ko kaafi bura bhala sunatay. Khair ab to GEO is really gooooooooooooood.
