Good Old Days …
Life’s strange; in many ways we grew up – yet many voids in us can only be filled by the childhood memories. They linger on – no matter how old we are.
A few years back, I posted the renderings below on another blog … just came across it and wanted to re-do the memories of my Bachpan … U may have enjoyed the same small things that was a MAJOR PART of our bachpan
Read on and enjoy the youthfulness as never before :>
Go back in time….
Before the Internet, VCD and DVD. Before semi-automatics machine guns, joyriders and crack ….
Before SEGA or Super Nintendo or Video Games…
Way back….
I’m talking about Hide and seek (Chhupan Chhupaee) in the park or on streets. The corner shop, Butter Scotch Candy,
Mitchells Milk Toffee, Jubilee, football with an old can, jumping in enormous puddles, Building dams.
The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.
Mayfair bubble gum. “Nice” sugar coated biscuits
A POLKA ice cream pop cone on a warm summer night,
The 2 and 3 rs shahi kulfis ….!
Wait……
Watching Weekday 5pm evening or Saturday Morning cartoons… short commercials, The Tom and Jerry, He-Man, Captain Caveman, Waltron, Walligator, Danger Mouse and Pink Panther.Staying up late for Night Rider, Air Wolf, golden monkeys or Power of Methew Star.Watching nice Urdu Plays like Un Kahi, Tanhaiyaan, Sunehray Din, Aangan Tera, Dhoop Kinaray ….!
When around the corner seemed far away, and going into down town or Liberty Market seemed like going somewhere.
A million mosquito bites, wasp and bee stings.
Sticky fingers.
Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
Running till you were out of breath. Ringing doorbells for no reason. The old ill-kept house down the street being haunted.
Laughing so hard that your stomach hurt. Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights. Climbing trees, building igloos Ice Lolies out of tiny amounts of snow.
Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for the giggles.
Being tired from playing…
Remember that?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team or your mom showing up at school to pick u up and kissing u infront of your friends.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
I’m not finished just yet…
Remember when…
You knew everyone in your street – and so did your parents!
It wasn’t odd to have two or three “best” friends.
You didn’t sleep a wink on EiD Chaand Raat.
When 100 Rs. was more than decent pocket money.
When you’d get both a coke and a slims for 5 Rs.
When nearly everyone’s mum was at home when the kids got there from School.
When dad was better than superman!
When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at real restaurant with your parents.
When being sent to the head’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!
And some of us are still afraid of them!!!
Didn’t that feel good?
Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!
Remember when….
Decisions were made by going “eeny- meeny-miney-mo.”
“Race issue” meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in “Monopoly”.
The worst thing you could catch from other person was germs, and the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to opposite sex.
Having a weapon in school, meant being caught with a catapult.
Nobody was prettier than your Mum.
Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.
Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.
Tooth was saved under your pillow for the Tooth Fairy to reward you with a rupee for it.
Abilities were discovered because of a “double-dare”.
Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.
When did life become SO complicated!!!
Whatever happened to times when having rubbers and pencils made us feel rich!
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!
Ahh … Memories

You just took me twenty years or more back. Thanks for the post.
Er…actually…Machine guns are almost invariably fully-automatic. Semi-automatics are, generally, the 9mm pistols.
Chhupan Chhupaee I, too, remember playing.
I still watch those cartoons on the Cartoon Network channel. ‘Tom and Jerry’, obviously, takes the top-spot.
Loved to watch Star Trek and The Old Fox, on TV, even though I didn’t understand English fully, until I was much older…
Never played monopoly…Never played Sega or Nintendo…Never got selected for any teams…was a sickly little boy…was quite shy too…
The ice-cream I ate was generally home-made…A 200ml coke used to cost Rs.2, I remember, when I was 4 i.e. in 1979…Didn’t have an older sibling…Wasn’t allowed to eat candy, chewing-gum, bubble-gum, etc. …Had a weak digestive system…So, eating outside the home, too, was an absolute no-no…
Climbed Litchi trees at my maternal grandparent’s place…It was great to feast on the sweet fruit, while being perched up there…Used to visit grandparents during summer-holidays…Loved to play with my paternal grandfather’s 12-bore gun, which was taller than I was, at that time…
Cycling-trips, including picnics with friends, were de rigueur.
Hated home-work… Loved flying paper aeroplanes…Wanted to learn to fly a kite… Never really became an expert…
Loved books, except text-books…used to read anything and everything I could lay my hands on…Loved comic-books too…Phantom, Mandrake, Flash Gordon, Tintin, etc., etc. … Loved to read detective stories and novels…Sherlock Holmes, The Hardy Boys, etc., etc. …
That certainly was a long time ago…
Ohhhhh…so it’s u who wrote this. Got to read it as a forwarded msg long time back and now again i’m feeling nostalgic
Wish we could turn back time just to live those carefree days again!
“When you’d get both a coke and a slims for 5 Rs.” — how old are u??!? just kidding…amazing post, you made me nostalgic, so much so that i can remember the smell of the first carpet we laid in our house and me and my brother wrestled all night on the carpet instead of the bed
Dear Asma,

Memories….!! *SIGH*…….I used to love frooto back in the day……..a chilled frooto that one bought from the friendly store wala nearby who knew absolutely everyone in the neighbourhood. And then there was the super crisp pack which all of us had in our respective lunch boxes however most of the times I had an egg sandwich…..blah!!! Still today it seems to be the best lunch time ever……:D
Extremely well written. Made me emotional…….*DOUBLE SIGH*

Sidhusaaheb hain hain hain … you were able to drink 2 bottles
I always used to insist to at least drink 2 bottles (half each was what i actually drank) during my childhood journeys – without them safar safar nahi lagat tha
Hera* Oh yup I loved my lunch too
I still have my lunch box with me :>
And why so many sighs my blog’s all chilled by now
Opee Hmm hmmm
I went to attend weddings only because of the ‘bottles’!
